An Open Letter to the Grapegrowing Community
As we close out the season on another successful harvest, after thirty years of such harvests, we have also arrived at the time when we will be retiring out of the vineyard management business. We have appreciated working with our many clients over the past years. We have developed and maintained vineyards all over the Napa and Sonoma Valleys, as well as in the Sierra Nevada foothills, and we have seen a lot of change and growth. It has been an exciting and rewarding era in premium winegrape growing. Now we pass the torch on to the next generation.
As some of you know, Al's son, Garrett Buckland, continues to work in the Napa Valley. Garrett has been involved in every aspect of farming ultra-premium winegrapes since before he was old enough to reach the pedals on the tractor. Garrett continued working with his father at Buckland Vineyard Management developing and managing vineyards across Napa, Sonoma, and El Dorado counties until completing his B.S. in Viticulture and Enology from the University of California at Davis in 2004.
After graduating from UC Davis, Garrett went on to become a partner in Premiere Viticulture LLC. Premiere provides viticultural consulting services to more than 1,000 acres of ultra-premium vineyards throughout Napa and Sonoma Valleys. In addition, Garrett is a consulting winemaker working with over 15,000 cases of ultra-premium wines, and has his own small high-end wine label. Garrett serves on the Board of the Napa Valley Grape Growers Association, is past President of the Napa Viticultural Technical Group, and past Conference Chair of the Association of Applied IPM Ecologists.
Our Napa and Sonoma clients have worked closely with Robert Jordan, who has held the position of Vineyard Manager with Buckland Vineyard Management for the past twelve years. Robert came to work with us shortly after he graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where he received a B.S. in Agri Business with a minor in Viticulture. Prior to attending Cal Poly, Robert's farming background started in the Salinas Valley working on all facets of a family operation growing 3000 acres of row crops and 250 acres of strawberries. Currently, Robert is an active director on the Board of the Napa County Farm Bureau, keeping abreast of important issues that affect the valley's winegrape growers.
Robert has direct knowledge of our vineyard operations and has gained extensive experience working in collaboration with Al over these many years. He has also worked in collaboration with Garrett Buckland and Premiere Viticulture on several vineyard projects. During the past seven years, Robert has invested directly into new equipment, and has researched and developed new approaches for the benefit of the clients of Buckland Vineyard Management.
Now, building on all of this dedication and experience, Robert is opening his own vineyard management company. We are excited for Robert as he takes this next step in his career. Robert plans to employ a good number of our experienced vineyard crew leaders and workers. Robert and our crews have been working as a cohesive team for many years, and Robert has shown himself to be an effective team leader and project manager. He is also a licensed Farm Labor Contractor and a licensed Pest Control Operator, both of which are important certifications for a Vineyard Manager.
If you would like to speak with Robert about engaging his new company to serve your vineyard management needs, you may contact him by phone at 707-312-0064.
We want to thank our clients and our industry partners for their business and for their involvement over the years. Many have become friends and we look forward to continuing our friendship.
Al and Karen Buckland
